The role of servers in the new technology era

This white paper documents changes in general-purpose compute needs over the past 30 years and how servers need to continue to evolve to provide a successful foundation for a vast array of workloads. As we consider the future of compute – and servers specifically – we see that workloads such as artificial intelligence (AI) will have a profound impact on how servers are designed, built, and configured. Additionally, where servers are deployed is evolving, requiring new generations to be built with the flexibility to host a wide variety of workloads in the data center, at the edge, or even in the cloud. So as workloads and compute continue to evolve, the server will continue to play a critical role in advancing applications, including scale and AI.
